Playa Coyote, also known as Puerto Coyote, is a beach at San Francisco de Coyote, in the canton of Nandayure, Guanacaste Province in Costa Rica. Located on the Nicoya Peninsula, it is situated at the Pacific Ocean at Ruta 160. Playa Coyote is among the many beautiful and remote beaches that sit off the western coast of the Nicoya Peninsula in Guanacaste province. Lying on the pristine shores of the Pacific, and in between Playa Samara and Playa Manzanillo, this beach is actually quite isolated as most roads leading here are dirt tracks that are very rough and practically impassable when it rains. The best way to reach this stunning beach is to catch a domestic flight from the capital San Jose to the airports of Samara or Islita, and then drive out to Playa Coyote via the village of San Francisco de Coyote, which is around four kilometers from the beach.

Quiet and tranquil, Playa Coyote is considered by many to be one of the best and remote beaches in Costa Rica. The perfect place to have a long relaxing holiday away from the hubbub of the city, this picturesque beach offers tourists amazing sunsets and spectacular views of the Pacific Ocean. Divided by the Rio Jabillo and a mangrove estuary, to get from the northern to the southern end of the beach you have to travel back up to San Francisco de Coyote and then back down again to the beach.
The Coyote beaches are from N. to S. playa Camaronal, Playa Islita, Playa Corozalito, Playa Bejuco, Playa Coyote (with Playa San Miguel, Playa Costa de Oro and Playa Coyote in the South), Playa Caletas, Playa Pencal.
The costarican village of San Francisco de Coyote is in the middle of these beaches and has a choice of cabinas, good supermarkets, restaurants, a coffee shop, an ICE office, a high school, a car repair shop and you can buy gasoline. Our Coyote office is located next to Cafe Sante coffee shop, so if you are in the area make sure to stop in for a delicious sandwich , a smoothy or a fresh made cappuchino.
Bus connection Jicaral and a direct bus to San Jose twice a day. The people who have holiday or live here all come for the tranquility and the nature. They escaped the noisy villages like Mal Pais and Nosara. All of the beaches are deserted, maybe you spot a surfer or fisherman at the beach.
On the beaches of San Miguel and Costa de Oro are some nice beach lots and beach houses for sale. In the hills close to the cost lines are some beautiful houses build through the years, some for sale. A bit further inland one can find very good priced fincas form 3HA to 250HA. In the mountains of Quebrada Grande and Los Angeles, close to San Francisco de Coyote and the beaches one can buy beautiful small Orange farms and coffee farms. The climate is very mild and the vegetation gentile and flowery. Above all, very friendly people and green surroundings.
Things To Do
The waters here are perfect for swimming as the tide remains low most of the time. However, further south near Punta Coyote, the swells are good enough to surf. Many Tico families often come here for a picnic as there is a good restaurant on the beachfront that has camping services and excellent seafood. Most people who stay in Playa Coyote usually camp out on the beach. On the other hand, for those who prefer a comfortable bed, San Francisco de Coyote has a few hotels, rooms and cabinas to stay at.
